AMAZONBAI: THE COOPERATIVE POWERING TUPAN’S SUSTAINABLE AÇAÍ BEANS

When you open a can of Tupan Açaí Coffee or Açaí Brew, you’re tasting more than a beverage. You’re tasting the work of riverside communities in the Brazilian Amazon, where açaí has been part of daily life for generations. Our official açaí bean supplier, Amazonbai, is a cooperative born in the Bailique Archipelago and Beira Amazonas — two territories at the mouth of the Amazon River that remain some of the most intact forest landscapes in Brazil.

ROOTED IN COMMUNITY AND CULTURE

Açaí is more than a crop here — it’s cultural heritage. For decades, families in these river communities harvested açaí and sold it through middlemen, often at unfair prices. In 2017, local leaders formalized a better way: they founded Amazonbai, a cooperative that united producers, improved prices, and ensured profits stayed in the community.

SUSTAINABILITY FROM TREE TO BEAN

Amazonbai’s work is guided by certified forest management practices (FSC®), USDA Organic standards, and Non-GMO Project requirements. Every step — from selective harvesting to post-harvest handling — follows protocols that protect forest health, maintain biodiversity, and ensure product integrity.

CERTIFICATIONS THAT MATTER

Amazonbai holds multiple certifications that align with Tupan’s values:
• FSC® Forest Management, Chain of Custody, and Ecosystem Services
• USDA Organic
• Non-GMO Project Verified
• Vegan Certification
• Selo Amapá (regional quality mark)

For our customers, these aren’t just labels. They’re proof of a supply chain built on transparency, traceability, and environmental stewardship.

PRODUCTION AND IMPACT

Amazonbai’s modern agro-industry in Macapá processes up to 12 tons of premium açaí per day during harvest. The cooperative counts over 140 members across 34 communities, representing more than 12,500 people. Beyond economic growth, their model invests in local schools, youth training, and infrastructure — from ice factories to communication systems — ensuring both quality product and resilient communities.

OUR PARTNERSHIP: FROM THE AMAZON TO YOUR CAN

Tupan sources all its açaí beans exclusively from Amazonbai. These beans are upcycled after the fruit pulp is removed, then carefully roasted to create the unique coffee-like base for our Açaí Coffee and Açaí Brew lines. It’s a process that adds value to what was once a byproduct, creating clean, functional beverages without caffeine or added sugar.

BEYOND BUSINESS: SHARED VALUES

Our collaboration with Amazonbai is built on aligned principles:
• Radical sustainability — keeping forests standing by making them economically valuable.
• Fair trade — ensuring harvesters receive equitable payment and long-term market security.
• Community empowerment — investing in local capacity, leadership, and education.

MARKET ACCESS AND GLOBAL REACH

Through partnerships like ours, Amazonbai accesses premium markets in Brazil and abroad. Their work has been showcased at sustainability and organic trade events, positioning Amazonian açaí as a symbol of both quality and conservation.

LOOKING FORWARD

Together, Tupan and Amazonbai are scaling impact: more communities engaged, more sustainable harvests, more biodiversity conserved. Every can of Tupan is a step toward an Amazon where economic opportunity and environmental preservation go hand in hand.
